Silent Hill 2 is the second installment in the Silent Hill survival horror series. The game was released in late 2001 on the Sony PlayStation 2 and was ported to the Microsoft Xbox later that year and PC the following year.

While the game is staged in the series' namesake town, it is not a direct sequel to the events and characters of the first Silent Hill game. Instead, it introduces James Sunderland, who enters the town after receiving a letter written by his deceased wife, saying she is waiting for him in their "special place" in Silent Hill.
